A Baroque palace, ‘Palazzo Labia’ with a reddish-coloured roof in front of the bell tower is near the Grand Canal in Venice in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It is known for massive ballroom frescoes & facades on 2 canals. The palace was built in the 17th century for the Labia family who were an extravagant merchant family from the province of Catalan in Spain. No expense was spared in constructing the prestigious walls of its ballroom with decorated frescoes by artist Giambattista Tiepolo telling the story of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. The social climbing Labias’ literally bought their way into the Libro d’Oro (the register of the Venetian nobility). They left behind tales of legendary wealth and pomposity. At one of their pretentious galas, gold dinnerware was thrown for sheer fun into the canal.
