Mixed culture of Candida yeasts. Close-up of a petri dish containing mixed cultures of Candida yeasts (Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis and Candida lusitaniae). The cultures are being grown on a chromogenic medium which helps identify a large spectrum of Candida species. Each species grows in a different colour and shows different morphological characteristics (Candida albicans is green, Candida tropicalis is metallic blue, Candida krusei is pink and fuzzy, and other species are white to mauve). Candida fungi are commonly found on the skin and the mucous membranes of the mouth, digestive and respiratory tracts and the vagina. Common candida infections include oral thrush, vaginal thrush and nappy rash.
