A mid 1800s old engraving of the panoramic view from York Column looking east over Victorian London and the River Thames with Waterloo and Blackfriars Bridges and in the distance St Pauls Cathedral. The bridge nearest is Waterloo Bridge. It was designed by John Rennie and opened in 1817 as a toll bridge. The granite bridge had nine arches. Before its opening it was known as the Strand Bridge. A new bridge on the site was completed in 1945. Behind is Blackfriars Bridge. It was a toll bridge designed in an Italianate style by Robert Mylne and constructed with nine arches of Portland stone. It opening in 1769. It was originally named ‘William Pitt Bridge’ (after the Prime Minister William Pitt the Elder). Although it was built of Portland stone the workmanship was faulty. It was decided to build a new bridge on the same site and the bridge was demolished in 1860. The present wrought-iron bridge dates from 1869.
