Detail of the stone carvings on the walls of the Kandariya Mahadeo Temple Khajuraho Madhya Pradesh India
Khajuraho in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is famous for its temples which have erotic carvings on the walls. Once the capital of the Chandela Rajput dynasty Khajuraho lay in complete neglect until the British officer TS Burt was guided to the place by his palanquin bearers in 1838. He was astounded by the sheer beauty of the temples and that was when the world was first introduced to the temples of Khajuraho. Built between 950 and 1050 the temples are dedicated to various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The erotic carvings on the outer walls of the temple are stunningly beautiful and very detailed. Around the temples are bands of very artistic carvings depicting Gods Goddesses warriors musicians real and mythological animals in various poses.
