Nakuto lab rock church, Amhara region, Lalibela, Ethiopia. Some women pray in the monastery of Nakuto Lab, on the outskirts of Lalibela. The mysterious subterranean churches, monolithic monuments extracted from stone in Lalibela, have been used uninterruptedly by Orthodox priests since the 12th and 12th centuries, when this distant mountain town was still the capital of the important Zagwe dynasty. The purpose of each church has eluded the work of modern historians: each building is unique in its size, shape and execution, accurately carved on the stone (some say it by thousands of workers) and some of them lavishly decorated.
