Desmosome cell junctions. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through tumour cells in a liver carcinoma, showing adhesion junctions or desmosomes (red). Desmosomes form the most common type of junction between epithelial cells, providing points of adhesion. They are molecular complexes of cell adhesion proteins and linking proteins. Magnification: x45,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
