The famous ancient yew at St Bartholomew's church, Much Marcle. It is dated between 1000 and 2000 yrs old. The trunk is hollow with a seat inside.


The famous ancient yew by the south, porch has a girth of circa 30ft and is claimed as c. 2000 years old (or at least 1000). English yew, Taxus baccata. Like most ancient yew trees the trunk is hollow. It has created an opening on north east side (facing the curch) allowing 3 wooden seats to be set in a U-shape inside the trunk, which will seat 7 or 8 people. Lower branches supported, held roughly horizontal all around tree by cast iron ‘lamp post’ columns with wooden crosspieces, plus extra wooded props & planks. Church mainly c13th: with central tower.
