Bactris gasipaes is a species of palm native to Central and South America's tropical forests. It grows to 20 meters or more with leaves as long as 3 meters. It has an edible fruit well known by the populations where it grows. It is usually eaten boiled or stewed in salted water. It can also be used to make edible oil or flour. The palm itself can also be harvested for palmitos or heart of palm. It is fast growing, with the first harvest usually between 18 and 24 months after planting.
