Brightfield light micrograph of human pancreas Islets of Langerhans and surrounding acinar cells. Shown in this image is a section through the pancreas exocrine and endocrine tissue with 2 Islets of Langerhans (lighter circular areas). The pancreas can be divided into endocrine and exocrine portions. The endocrine portion consists of small aggregations of cells, the islets of Langerhans, which secrete hormones such as insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin into the portal venous system. The glandular epithelial cells of the exocrine pancreas are organized into acini which convey their secretion into a branching system of ducts. The parenchyma of the gland is divided into lobules by thin connective tissue septa that contain ducts, blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels. Each acinus is also closely surrounded by a supportive meshwork of connective tissue. Magnification: x100 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
