Because of their slow growth compared with fast-growing varieties like willow, poplar and maple, both spruce and pine can be seriously affected by the whipping action of the branches on fast-growing varieties. As a general rule spruce, which are shade tolerant, manage to stay alive under these adverse conditions, but pine will soon die if severely suppressed by an adjacent row of trees.
