James Augustus Grant (1827-1892), Scottish soldier and explorer. With John Hanning Speke, Grant found the source of the Nile River to be Rippon Falls on Lake Victoria. Grant served as a soldier in the British Army in India during the Sikh Wars (1849) and the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858). In 1860 he began his travels in Africa, discovering Rippon Falls in 1862. His records of this journey were published in A Walk Across Africa (1864).
