Before tsunami. Image 1 of 4. Satellite image of the Sri Lankan resort area of Kalutara, 1 January 2004. There are buildings, roads and trees, and waves breaking on the beach. On the morning of 26 December 2004, a massive underwater earthquake, nearly 2000 kilometres to the east near Indonesia, created huge waves, or tsunamis, that devastated areas around the Indian Ocean. This area suffered heavy flooding from the sea and many people died. Over 150,000 died around the Indian Ocean, though the full death toll may never be known. Quickbird satellite image. For this coastline before and during the tsunami, see images E275/042-045.
