Brain-computer interface research. A researcher works with a patient to test the Robik prototype brain-computer interface (BCI). The patient has partial locked-in syndrome, preventing speech. He counts and selects letters flashed up in a matrix on the computer screen, and electrodes attached to his head detect the resulting electrical signals from his brain. The system software decodes the signals into letters which are spelt out on the screen.
