Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands: a vessel manned by Dunkirk privateers - officially sanctioned pirates - sinks as a ship commanded by courageous Dutch sea captain Cornelis Janszoon de Haan rakes it with cannon fire. The Dutch naval hero, born in Amsterdam in 1580 and nicknamed ‘Haantje’ or Rooster, was killed in this victory on 19 April 1633 over two privateer ships, but the battle is commemorated by a Latin inscription on his gilded Baroque monument in the city’s Oude Kerk (Old Church) and is also depicted in this contemporary oil painting below it. The de Haan monument is among several memorials in the church to naval commanders from the Dutch Golden Age, the period in Netherlands history spanning the years from 1588 (the birth of the Dutch Republic) to 1672, when Dutch trade, science, art and military expertise were regarded as the best in Europe. The mainly-14th century Oude Kerk, in Ouderkerksplein, is the oldest building in Amsterdam. It was a Roman Catholic church until 1578, but gained a Calvinist congregation following the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and the Protestant Reformation. It is now a museum of architecture and art, but it still hosts a Protestant Sunday service.
