Boardman, of Illi-nois, came here and purchased alarge tract of land from the govern-ment, and under great difficulties,with energy and perseverance suc-ceeded in building up a little set-tlement with sawmill, postoftice and other essentials ofearly pioneer life. In 1891 he sold out all his interestto the firm of Hannah, Lay & Co., then young men,who at once began the making of a cit} and to whosesagacity and indomitable energy much of the presentprosperity of Traverse Cit} is due.
