Marcel Grossmann (1878-1936), German mathematician. Grossmann was a friend and classmate of Albert Einstein at Zurich Polytechnic, Switzerland. His lecture notes helped Einstein to graduate despite Einstein's poor attendance at lectures. Grossmann also helped Einstein to get a job in the Swiss Patent Office. Later, as professor of mathematics at Zurich, he calculated with Einstein the change in Mercury's orbit that would confirm Einstein's theory of relativity. This change was observed in 1919.
