The ex-perience is simply disgusting, but it seemsto be enjoyed by people with an abnormaltaste for novelty. The First Cars Heated by Hot Waterand Steam. In the year 1865 VVm. C. Baker com-menced erecting and putting into practi-cal service in the cars of the then NewYork & New Haven Railroad non-freezing hot water car heater, thesame as is now so much used in first-classpassenger cars. Thebattery consists of sixty elements, givingan output of 60 amperes for 2j4 hours, atfrom 98 to 125 volts; it is divided into twoparts, which can be connected in series orparallel as required. The motors run at580 revolutions per minute; but this speedis reduced by means of the gearing sothat the boats travel at about zl4 milesper hour. The power required for this isfrom about 2 to sVi horse-power, accord-ing as the boats are traveling with oragainst the current. The total length of sewers open in thisway to the public is about two miles, andthey are lighted partly by lamps on the New Haven. Conn. The heater was soonadopted by the
