April 18, 1914.] ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL 889 SAFETY SUCTION DEVICES FOR PUNCH PRESSES For some time the Westinghouse Electric & Manu-facturing Company at East Pittsburgh, Pa., triedmechanical safety devices of various kinds for thepunch shop but with unsatisfactory results. The opera-tors found them unsuited because of the fact that theytended to retard the production and consequently theirearnings, while the management also objected to thembecause they afforded only partial protection, as theoperator had to place his hand under the press in everyinstance in order to remove the scrap. The suction device illustrated herewith was developedto prevent the necessity of the operator approachingthe danger point at any time during the operation, ashe feeds and clears the press with the same tool. An-other advantageous point is that the operator does nottake hold of the material with his hands (this appliesprincipally to the smaller sizes) and thereby escapes. Suction Device in Use on a Punch Press the numerous small cuts to which he was subjected wheninserting the blanks with his fingers. The double-handle device used on large work shown inthe illustration is absolutely safe. The operator iscompelled to use the device owing to the size of thesheets handled, as it is impossible to get hold of thesheets any other way. Before adopting this methodthe man who was placed at the back of the press to feedin the sheets was the one most frequently injured be-cause his fingers were entirely at the mercy of theoperator. Since the adoption of the suction device not one am-putation has occurred on the large presses, and up to thepresent time no finger has been amputated in the punchshop. This happy result has been due to the operationof the devices and to the rigid enforcement of the shoprules. The suction device was exhibited and receivedthe grand prize at the recent International Expositionof Safety and Sanitation in New York City
