The NorthSea-Baltic Canal was begun in 1887 and completed in 1895, and, though constructed primarily for mihtaryand naval reasons, it has proven to be of great value to the commerce of Germany. The canal connects Brunsbuettel Harbor, on the Elbe, with Holtenau, on Kiel Bay.
