The spike maul. seen one end is drawn down very small to about % of aninch across the face, both ends are dressed as an ordi- TOOLSMITH AND STEELWORKER 171 nary hammer. To harden, heat the large end of thespike maul first to a cherry red about % of an inchback from the face, having the center of the face at aneven heat with the outside or comers in order that itwill harden properly, then dip in the hardening bath toabout 1% inches deep. Then polish the face and allowthe temper to run down to a light blue. If there is notenough heat in the spike maul to drive down the tem-per it can be drawn by holding the end over the fire, and slowly and continually turning it around until thetemper is drawn to the desired color. Harden and tem-per both ends the same way, but be not to drawthe temper in the end which is already hardened andtempered while heating to harden the second , if the large end is hardened and temperedfirst, there will be no danger of the temper dr
