We have quite a number in this condi- tion and would like to know the cause. Your advice will be appreciated. D. B.—Ind. The most probable reason for your hya- cinth spikes rotting off at the base in this way is that you have watered them improperly, pouring the water into the centers of the plants rather than over the sides of the pots. Zl your plants stood below a bench and were exposed to a drip of any kind, the same trouble would appear. On a light, sunny bench, with careful watering, there should be no trouble. Daffodils and tulips would show no ill effects from somewhat care- less watering, but hyacinths are much more susceptible to dampness when under glass or in a pit or in a cellar only mod- erately lighted.
