In the water-tubeboiler the hammer head is changed slightly, and as the cleaneris forced through the tube it breaks the scale up into smallpieces, which are blown out of the tube in front of the the cleaner fits snugly into the tube, it must remove allscale before it can pass any point. One might imagine that with a stroke of 4000 times aminute there must be a considerable blow struck against thetube, but tests performed by the well-known engineer, H. Kavanaugh, of the University of Minnesota, show thatthe blow is very slight, and that it is the rapidity of the blowrather than its force which accomplishes such satisfactoryresults.
