In American Revolution, British called for John Paul Jones to surrender. Jones replied, I have not yet begun to fight.

John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was an American naval hero. He raided the shores of British Isles during the Revolutionary War. In this illustration, he is shown on deck the USS Bonhomme Richard, a warship in the Continental Navy, in 1776. On September 23, 1779, in the North Sea, Jones battled the British Royal Navy ship Serapis, under Captain Richard Pearson. When Pearson called for Jones to surrender, Jones was reported to have replied: I have not yet begun to fight (the moment captured here). Jones did defeat Serapis.
