The Big Hammer, a 30 ton steam hammer for heavy forging work in the Armstrong Whitworth, Elswick works, manufacturing concern on Tyneside founded in 1847 by engineer William George Armstrong (1810- 1900), an English engineer and industrialist. It manufactured hydraulic machinery, cranes and bridges and, later, artillery.
