For the firstfew weeks the tillage should be verydeep. The soil should be stirred verythoroughly. The plan of cultivation called leveltillage is usually best for this crop. Themost successful growers sometimesthrow a little dirt towards the vines atthe times of the last cultivation. Verymuch ridging, however, is certain tocause the soil to dry out. This is ex-tremely detrimental to the growing soil should be kept moist and cooland the vines should be allowed to spread out over the ground toshade it as soon as cultivation is stopped.
