Cervical smear examination. Gynaecologist performing a cervical smear or pap test on a patient. A specimen of cellular material, on a wooden spatula, is smeared onto a glass slide. The cells come from the neck (cervix) of the uterus and will later be examined in a laboratory. Cells that appear abnormal may indicate developing cervical disease or cancer.
