When money and sup-plies became more and more diflBciilt to obtain, sheorganized the great Northwestern fair at Chicago in1863, the first of the sanitary fairs held throughoutthe country. The Chicago fair netted nearly $100,000to the Sanitary commissron. She afterward organizedten other sanitary fairs, which furnished large sumsof money for the army. When the war closed shebegan a most successful career as a lecturer, whichbrought her in contact with the best literary mindsof the country, and made for her many friends. Shehas labored incessantly for the advancement ofwomen and their civil rights, and has been a tirelessworker in the cause of temperance. Of late yearsher home has been at Melrose, Mass.
