Sunny view, to Trinity Bridge and Lowry Hotel, people sitting riverside walkway by River Irwell reflections, Salford, Manchester

The cantilever, spar cable-stayed Trinity Footbridge, designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava, opened in 1994 at a cost of £ million. The River Irwell, in industrial times, was heavily polluted by factory effluent and raw sewage. As with Salford Quays, the one-time location of Manchester Docks, the river has undergone clean-up and regeneration with a riverside walkway, a popular lunch-break location, on the Salford bank (foreground). A view from the Salford Riverside Walkway towards the Lowry Hotel (left background), which opened in 2001. On the Salford side of the River Irwell, the hotel gives its address as 'Manchester'.
