Hygiene for young people . ENE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. have good rich blood, nor would they be ableto digest their food properly; they would growweak and be likely to catch some disease anddie. So, overcrowding is bad for the health—overcrowding in bedrooms or overcrowding inschoolrooms or churches or factories or work-shops. There should be so much fresh air foreveryone in a room that it would never bestuffy. If there are many people in a roomeach cannot get enough oxygen from the air, unless it is changed very often. You will see, then, that the answer to thequestion, How large a room should we livein? depends upon two things. It dependsupon how many people are in the room andupon how often the air is changed. It may help you to understand how the airin a room may be changed, if you will performthe following experiment: Provide two lamp chimneys and a tightlycovered tin box- one that lias held tea or starchwill do very well. Make a hole about an inch indiameter near one end of the cover and over this FRESH AIR. 19. Figure 6.—Chimneyburning candle on i hole place one of the chimneys, sealing it downwith wax. At the opposite side ofthe cover, punch a circle ofsmall holes round a the candle and bringthe second chimney downover it. Fasten this chimneyalso to the box with that no air may pass intothe . box round the bottomof the chimney. Xow watchwhat happens. If you have arranged the apparatus properly, fresh air will pass into the box by one chimney, and foul air from the candle will go <»ut by theother. In other words, the box will be ven-tilated. A piece of smoking paper over onechimney will show the direction of the aircurrents. A small living room with a large famih in it or a small schoolroom with many childrenin it, should 1m- ventilated in somewhat thesame way. 20 HYGIENE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE.
