Photograph by David Coleman. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is an iconic steel through arch bridge that has become one of Australia's most recognizable landmarks. Opened in 1932, it spans Sydney Harbour, connecting the city's central business district with its North Shore. Affectionately nicknamed "The Coathanger" due to its distinctive arch-based design, the bridge stands as a testament to Australian engineering and has become an integral part of Sydney's identity. Designed by Dr. John Bradfield and built by Dorman Long and Co Ltd of Middlesbrough, England, the Sydney Harbour Bridge held the record for the world's widest long-span bridge until 2012. It measures 134 meters (440 feet) from water level to the top of its arch and spans 503 meters (1,650 feet) in length. The bridge serves multiple transportation functions, carrying eight vehicle lanes, two train lines, a pedestrian walkway, and a cycleway. It plays a crucial role in Sydney's transportation network, facilitating the movement of approximately 200,000 vehicles each day. Beyond its practical purpose, the Sydney Harbour Bridge has become a major tourist attraction. The BridgeClimb experience, introduced in 1998, allows visitors to ascend to the summit of the arch, offering panoramic views of Sydney Harbour and the city skyline. The bridge also features prominently in Sydney's cultural events, serving as a centerpiece for New Year's Eve fireworks displays and the Vivid Sydney festival of light. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, along with the nearby Sydney Opera House, forms an internationally recognized duo that symbolizes both Sydney and Australia to the world. Its enduring presence continues to captivate locals and visitors alike, standing as a proud symbol of Australia's progress and engineering prowess.
