Rutilated quartz. Rutilated quartz, also known as sagenitic quartz, occurs when acicular crystals of rutile (titanium dioxide, dark) are enclosed in quartz (silicon dioxide, clear). Here, the quartz crystal has a hexagonal rhombohedral trapezohedral shape. Rutile is a major ore of the metal titanium.
