His mother was a daughter of John Powell. WiUiam Powell Mason prepared for college in the Boston publicschools. He graduated at Harvard College in the class of 1811,and at once took up the study of law in the office of HonorableCharles Jackson. He was admitted to practice in the Court ofCommon Pleas in Boston in September, 1814, and in the SupremeJudicial Court in December, 1816. In that year he succeeded JohnGallison as reporter of the first circuit of the United States.
