It wasfirst named Falmouth, was settled by an English colony in 1632,and was three times burnt in the wars with the French and Indians,while, in 1866, a fire destroyed $10,000,000 worth of property. Ithas a population of some 40,000 inhabitants and possesses broad,shaded streets, and handsome public and private edifices, at thesame time forming a centre to the numerous watering-places withinreach, where the purest of sea air can be enjoyed. Among theseare Old Orchard, Pine Point and Biddeford Pool, all of which arewithin a few minutes ride by rail, while Cushings Island, PeaksIsland, Long Island, and Chebeague Island can be reached severaltimes daily by the steamers, which ply in the bay. By those fondof the water, capital boating and yachting can here be enjoyed.
