If you put all flowering plants on an evolutionary tree, Amborella is on the lowest branch. Fossils of older, extinct angiosperms have been found, but Amborellaceae is the oldest known angiosperm family with a member still living. Today flowering plants comprise 250,000 species, which include most of the fruits, vegetables and grains we eat. Charles Darwin, the great proponent of gradual evolution over time, called the rapid rise of angiosperms “an abominable mystery.”
