John Maynard Smith (1920-2004). Caricature of the British biologist John Maynard Smith. Maynard Smith studied engineering at Cambridge and then completed a second degree in genetics at University College London. In 1976 he formally applied game theory to evolution and published 'Evolution and the Theory of Games' in 1982. He also theorised and authored books on other problems, such as the evolution of sex and signalling theory.
