It can-not be maintained, however, that machine-made tulle isas charming a material as vrai reseau ; its dressing, as arule, tends to make it wiry and harsh to the touch, andalthough this may be lessened by modification, the cottonthread, employed both for the lace ornaments and thetulle, lacks that delicate suppleness which is characteristicof the pure and fine flax thread used in vraie Angleterrelaces. TO THE PRESENT TIME. 313 modern cotton fabrics are not powdered with whitelead, a pernicious and perfectly useless ingredient,frequently used, with dire effect to the health of thelace-workers and the good preservation of the lace. Lace ornaments applied to tulle are not solely madeon the pillow, some are of needlepoint work done in thesame way as in the eighteenth century, when laceapplications of pillow-made and needlepoint were sewnwith admirable effects upon vrai reseau.
