Mandatory credit Mandatory credit James Watson (), US biochemist and co-discoverer of the structure of DNA. Watson entered the University of Chicago when only 15, gaining his degree at 19 and a doctorate at 22. In 1951 he moved to Cambridge, joining Francis Crick in the search for the structure of DNA. The pair used much existing work, as well as crystallography data by Wilkins and Franklin, and in 1953 published their 'double helix' structure. This work led to Crick, Watson and Wilkins sharing the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Watson returned to the USA in 1953, leading a fruitful if controversial academic life.
