The cellular tissue consists of an oval or roundedmeshwork, and is coarser than that of coffee. The lac-tiferous tubes are long pale and narrow branching tubes,which are filled with a substance called * latex. Thedotted ducts appear as jointed tubes marked with bars,and possessing square extremities. No starch is contained in chicory. Of the other vegetable adulterants of coffee, mangold-wuvzel possesses a cellular tissue which has a tendencyto consist of larger and more distinct elements; thedotted ducts have fewer joints, there are no lactiferoustubes, nor is there any starch.
