Photograph by David Coleman. The bronze statue of John Marshall, located in John Marshall Park in Washington, DC, is a replica of the original 1883 statue by William Wetmore Story. Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, served from 1801 to 1835 and is widely credited with establishing the principle of judicial review through landmark Supreme Court cases. The statue shows Marshall seated in his judicial robes, holding a document in one hand, a representation of his critical contributions to American law. The original statue was moved to the Supreme Court building in 1981, and this replica was placed in John Marshall Park in 1985 as part of the park's development by the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation. The statue is one of three identical castings, with others at the Supreme Court and in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The park is located near Judiciary Square and is home to several other sculptures that celebrate the legal heritage of the United States.
