Cheyenne, named after the Cheyenne Indian Nation, one of the most famous and prominent Great Plains tribes, was founded in 1867 at a crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad at Crow Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River. The Union Pacific Railroad reached Cheyenne on 13 November 1867, when the town's population was 4000. The Union Pacific Railroad Depot, a passenger station for the railway, was built 1886-87, and is one of the most beautiful railway stations in North America.
