Research Scientist Examining an Ice Core

Gudrun Larsen , a research scientist, is holding an Ice Core with layers showing ash and pumice from the Gjalp eruption 1996, and the Vatnajokull eruption in Grimsvotn 1998, both located in Iceland. The Vatnajokull eruption is also known as the Grimsvotn eruption. These both eruptions are extremely unique. They are the only eruptions in the world, which erupt under the Glacier (Ice Cap). Vatnajokull is 8400 square kilometres with average thickness of 500 meters and is the biggest glacier in Europe. The Ice cores are drilled only 6 to 18 meters down which is only snow for one year. There is an ice lens between years in the snow separating the winters.
