His accomplished mother was a Burnets,whose paternal grandfather came from Aberdeenin the colonial days, her maternal grandfatherbeing Daniel DeSaussure, whose son W. H. De-Saussure was first Controller of the United Statesmint and whose wife was Sarah Mcpherson, ofBadenoch-Cluny descent.
