H IS Eminence Cardinal McCloskey, in 1876, deemedit necessary to create a new parochial districton the west side of the city, to relieve the existingchurches. To gather the faithful and organize a newcongregation, he selected the Rev. M. J. Brophy. That clergyman found the Plymouth Baptist Churcli,on West Fifty-first Street, between Ninth and TenthAvenues, for sale, and, deeming it adapted for the com-mencement of the new parish, pmchased it, in January,1876, for the sum of twenty-four thousand five hundreddollars. It is a fine church, with a front of fifty-twofeet, running back the usual depth of city lots, and canseat nine hundred
