Leaves ovate-lanceolate, acute at both ends, crenated, glabrous above, with subrevolute edges. Under side of leaves, as well as the petioles, which are keeled, and branches, which are te- tragonal, covered with scurfy dots. Corymbs sessile. (Bon's Mill.) A large shrub or low tree. New York to Carolina, in swamps. Height 3 ft. to 5 ft. in America; 10 ft. to 12ft. in England. Flowers white ; June and Fruit ovate, bluish black; ripe in September. 7. V.
