Bratislava, Slovakia. The Barbican is one of the ancient entrances to the old city.

Bratislava, Slovakia. Barbican is derived from Arabic or Persian and means "gate-house". It was a common practice to build an additional fortified outpost just outside of an existing gate to make the gate less vulnerable in the event of an attack. The barbican in front of the Michael's gate was built in the 15th century and although it is still there, it is not clearly visible because of the obstruction by newer buildings. Notice that the barbican still has openings that were used by ropes of a drawbridge.
