When an active defence is contem-plated (which would be the general rule) the obstacles left shouldbe such as not to interfere with counter-attack. In clearing Screens,the foreground, the value of leaving screens to hide thedefenders movements must be considered [see Chap. VIII,Sec. 63). It is difficult to make exact estimates of time requiredto clear ground, as difficulties cannot be foreseen. The tableon p. 120 can only be taken as a rough guide for
