By this piece of eavesdropping,which the zealous woman no doubt felt wasentirely justified as a war expedient, she learnedit was decided to issue an order that all theBritish troops should march out, late on thefourth of December, to surprise General Wash-ington and his army. Having learned this important decision, retired to her room, and, lying down, feigned to be asleep. When one of the officersknocked at the door, she did not reply untilthe summons had been several times repeated. After the departureof the officers shehardly knew what todo, in order to getword of the intendedsurprise to knew it lay in herpower to save the livesof thousands of hercountrymen.
