Inertia experiment. 19th-century illustration of an experiment demonstrating the principles of inertia. A rod is suspended between two fragile supports (here, two loops of paper). When struck with a rapid motion with another rod of the same material, the rod will break rather than the paper supports. The reason is that very little force reaches the supports, with the breaking force concentrated at the point of impact. This illustration, part of a section titled 'Experiences de Physique sans Appareils' (illustrating popular physics experiments that don't require the use of laboratory equipment), is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
