I have sent one for a distance of ahundred yards, and the natives can propelthem to a still greater distance. There is acertain art in using the pucuna, the arrownot being urged by a lengthened breath, butby collecting all the air that the lungs willhold, and giving a short expiration, as if theobject were to empty the lungs at one force comes entirely from the lungs, thecheeks having nothing to do with it. Whenan arrow is rightly propelled, it flies fromthe tube with a slight pop, like that which isproduced by quickly drawing the cork of asmall bottle. It is quite invisible for somelittle time, so rapid is the motion; and evenwhen fitted with white instead of yellowcotton the eye can scarcely follow its course.
