Apples ripening on old tree in central Virginia. Tree has not been sprayed with pesticides or fungicides, so apples have developed a fungal disease called sooty blotch, which would make them unmarketable. Organic apples of market quality are difficult to grow in the humid eastern part of North America due to the prevalence of disease organisms, such as the sooty blotch fungus, that thrive in high relative humidity.
